Can Karaoke speakers break if used mainly for TV?

Okay so we have these 2 huge Karaoke speakers that is rarely used so I decided to just plug them in onto my TV and now my mom is saying that the speakers can break, is it possible? At first I completely disagreed but with little thought I also thought that if these speakers were made for Karaoke, its main purpose is to amplify your voice, and the song that is chosen not for an every day usage of whatever comes on TV so yeah what do you guys think?
